Rhetorical Situation

Post  WBK95 on Thu Jan 29, 2015 6:44 pm

As a role of a writer, I should know four aspects about analyzing the rhetorical situation which are writer, reader, text and medium. If I have a topic or subject to write, I need to think about why am I writing this paper and how to describe the topic in my point of view. If there are a lot of topics I can have choices, why I choose this topic specifically. In other words, I need to think about the reason  why I am interested in this topic. These are all about "writer". And I also should consider what kind of readers will be interested in my topic. what attractions for my audiences stop by my papers. Readers will give the feedback to writers and their responds is very important to the writers. The next is "text", this is all about what to write and what interesting things readers want to read. As for the "medium", it's not only including newspapers, books, etc. Writers should think which kind of medium their audience like. Medium is  determined by specific kind of person. Different people would approach to different ways to read. In the examples of the reading, I found that it is interesting when I read the essay of Annette Chambers. I think she was really serious about her readers and it was obviously that her audience was only her teacher. She tried to use humor to attract her reader which is a good strategy. And I also really dropped in her essay, in other words, she accomplished her goal. She started her beginning as a fantastic life when she playing her role-playing-game.I think that was a really good part to describe her hobby.
If I need to pick one from Aristotle's three appeals, I would like to choose pathos. I think the emotion, values and spirits are the most essential aspects of an essay. It contains everything of the author, such as personalities and purposes of writing the material.

Kairos

Post  WBK95 on Sun Feb 01, 2015 1:07 am

kairos is an attempt to persuade through appeals to timeliness. That is taking advantage of the particular time and place to make texts unique and effectively.

According to the reading material, the weblog is a medium which has unique intersection of public and individual opinions. Weblogs becomes a genre because of the improvement of technology and this kind of new approach to discourse and communication spread very fast. The author assists that it is a kairos for weblogs arose and developed. I think it’s true because I will see blogs during my free time after studying or work and I really addict to these different ideas or stories on blogs, in addition, viewing weblogs becomes my lifestyle. I also post my blogs sometimes to convey my thoughts of something happen in my daily life.

Some parts I could not understand is that I am not understand the “democratization of celebrity", and why this celebrity culture can make “celebrities into regular people (as with Clinton) and making regular people into celebrities (as with Lewinsky)”?
Also, I want to know if the athor consider it is a kairos for blogs become a kind of genre, I am wondering whether someday weblogs will out of fashion as time goes by and this type of discourse may becomes a history.
Many people are not interested in reading in electronic version, so blogs are not popular in these kind of people, so will that be properly to determine blogs as a genre?

prewritting #1

Post  WBK95 on Sun Feb 08, 2015 12:01 am

I want to be a painter or an illustrator since I was a child. I have learned a lot about painting from others’ blog. I would like to introduce one which really attracts me. This is an illustration blog founded by a Chinese painter, who has published his own picture book “In Our Planet”. “Hi, I’m Oamul Lu. Enjoy my life and drawing”, he drops down these simple words on the front page at the very beginning. The headline of this blog is just his Chinese name “Lumao” at the top of the left corner and also a small round favicon adhere to his name. The major part of the front page shows all of his works. They are laying out as time sequence ordinarily, the most front is the latest, very simple and briefly. His pictures are talking about harmonious coexistence between human and animals. He likes to use green as basic color in the background.

I am really enjoy browsing his gallery not only because of his talent, the great painting skills, but also the themes and a peaceful perspective he wants to show us. I think people who would like to drop by his blog must be the one loves nature and animals. His audience might be a kind of person who leads a simple and peaceful lifestyle.

Some drawings are describing a little story about a natural life of a fox, and these stories are very interesting. When the audiences see them, they might be attracted by Oamul’s lovely painting style. And he or she will go through them to find out what’s happening of this story and being curious about the little fox. And these pictures may have a meaningful knowledge to express author’s idea behind the story. That gives his audience a different reading experience from reading “Word to Live By”.

The weblogs is an efficient storytelling medium for hobbyists. The abundant images and various characters can keep its audience hooked. The stories in the blog are about facing struggles and solving problems for people, and make them conversational. Audiences could feel an emotion and feel like the authors are speaking to them.

Q&A Video analyze

Post  WBK95 on Fri Feb 20, 2015 10:23 am

The first politician gives many examples to show that there are many people struggling surviving, such as 67.7% unemployment and he mentions that administration had to borrow 106 billion dollars. He gives so many details that indicate Obama’s tax policy need to improve, and he suggested that Obama’s administration tax cover did not work. He asks these questions with authority and raises his question based on truth.
Politician’s language and tones are pretty gentle and rigorous, for example, the third question raised by a lady who said: “I’m asking if you would be willing to relook at some of these policies…” and “Thanks, Mr. President. It’s truly honor.” When politicians ask him questions, they were a little anxious and with respect manor.
Obama answers these questions with patience and responsible. He is confident and his answers have a well-thought-plan. He tried to tell many detail such as large commercials, small commercials and budgets to explain the situation. He gives an example: “allowing insurance company to sell state lodge.” which proves he already set proposals to cover people’s insurance. Sometimes he was a little bit stammer when answering politicians’ questions. His answers are logically, he gives two points when answer the second politician’s question.

These kinds of blogs are nice. Some artists do not have enough money to have a really gallery to show his or her works. Blogs make this happend.

response of WRITING IS A TECHNOLOGY THAT RESTRUCTURES THOUGHT

Post  WBK95 on Fri Mar 06, 2015 5:47 pm

Literacy of visually processed sounds in the oral world is quite different from actual written language. Literacy comes from the orality of culture, for instance, television and radio, which are originally “grow out of high-literacy cultures.
The author gives several examples to illustrate his idea. He rises up “functionally literate persons” who are the human beings “chirographically thinking and speaking”.
He also talks about the sound which is evanescent lead to the oral world becomes distresses literates. “literates want words and thoughts pinned down-though it is impossible to ‘pin down’ an event.” The formulaic structures and procedures, which are stick in people’s mind and function to complete and counteract the evanescent.

Gee’s “What is Literacy”

Post  WBK95 on Mon Mar 09, 2015 7:50 pm

As Lee defined, literacy studies has developed in linguistics and then applies linguistic principles to literacy studies. Also, literacy is “the mastery of or fluent control over a secondary Discourse.” I think “Discourse” is a significant concept which is talked little about reading and writing strictly, but in addition is a method of being “an integration of words, acts, values, beliefs, attitudes, and social identities”. He says: “the focus of literacy studies or applied linguistics should not be language, or literacy, but social practices.”

It is quite different from what I have learned about literacy. I think literacy is all about language learning, grammar and rhetorical situations. However, I know start consider literacy concludes social acquisition. He explicates as also involving gestures, body language and speech. Literacy is a broad aspect and He says: “As far as literacy goes, there are only ‘fluent speakers’ and ‘apprentices’ (metaphorically speaking, because remember, Discourses are not just ways of talking, but ways of talking, acting, thinking, valuing, etc)”
When I reading literacy stories, I would try to analyze the particular discourse and maybe figure out how primary and secondary discourse acquisition functioning in the story.

Literacy story

Post  WBK95 on Wed Mar 11, 2015 11:39 pm

The purpose of literacy story which involve in the reading is to describe how a particular person or group acquires their secondary discourse. Secondary discourse can be developed from primary discourse, which means secondary discourse is expanding primary discourse to fit other environments or situations.
I will take Harry Potter for instance. Harry was raised by his aunt who is a Muggle and kept him safe, so he was developed in a normal family but he wasn't treated very well by his aunt and uncle. It is obviously that he was lonely and being separated with other children. He developed independent by himself. His primary discourse is building on a sad childhood.
Then, as the plot goes on, Harry undertakes his first year of study at Hogwarts, at where he begins to explore the magical world. He gains his two closest friends Ron and Hermione, and also encounters the school's potions master, Severus Snape. He acts differently from other withes and wizards because he does not have experiences with magic that other students grow up with. In his secondary discourses, he catches up with magic knowledge such as join in the class "Defense against the Dark Arts" and participates in Quidditch game. Harry develops through his adolescence; he learns to overcome the problems that face him: magical, social and emotional, including ordinary teenage challenges such as friendships, infatuation and exams, and these experiences are his secondary discourse. The dominant discourse is that the interaction with magic, powerful old families (pure blood wizards). Since he has never engaged in the wizard world before his young age, it is a huge shift for him to communicate with the community. There also has a conflict between the discourses; Harry must fight against the Voldemort's minions which is a powerful discourse in wizard world.

I will take another instance. Regarding to the experience that learning mathematics, it also involves many literacy functions. When I learn how to express a special theorem which contains many specific symbols, I have to learn how to pronounce these symbols and I also need to understand the meaning of them.

In addition, many people would like to travel to Alaska to satisfy their craving of casino. Referring the game Texas Hold'em Poker, many people would be confused of the rule in the first glance. Some jargon such as “Full house”, “Straight” and “The three-zone” which are not easy for people know the shape or pattern of cards. Also, for new player it requires the skills to recognize which is larger between two shapes.

Also, for new player it requires the skills to recognize which is larger between two shapes.

i like watching Harry Potter too, Hermione is so beautiful lol! king albino Razz
