Ong argues here that literacy is imperious. In this context, it can be described as being arrogant or pretentious. Therefore, Ong concludes that being illiterate means that one is a deviant in a social class, and they lack the ability. He also touches on how literacy has developed over the years. Ong states that literacy has significantly decreased due to the increase in technology. In the second portion of the essay, Ong makes reference to Plato. He touches on Plato's view on literacy. Plato believes that writing was ruining literacy. He makes the argument that writing weakens the mind.
