Ong's Literacy

Post  ElisiaSan on Wed Mar 20, 2013 12:33 pm

Ong’s paper argues that literacy is imperious. “It tends to arrogate to itself supreme power by taking itself as normative for human expression and thought.” Imperious here means to be arrogant or to have power without justification. So to be illiterate, “suggests that person belonging to the class it designates are deviants, defined by something they lack, namely literacy.” I feel as though Ong explained his meaning of literacy by defining illiteracy and how a person is looked upon if they were to be illiterate in any subject. And also, how he felt as though Literacy is thought to be something normal, “…literacy is regarded as so unquestionably normative and normal…”
