Literacy Response
“A socially accepted association among ways of using language, of thinking, and of acting that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a socially meaningful group or a social network.” This is how Gee defines the term discourse, which plays a major role in literacy, or the control of secondary use of language. He believes literacy is learned, not obtained, and uses the definition of discourse to help illustrate this to the reader.
This definitely changes how I view literacy. Before, I had never thought about what literacy truly meant and how it could be viewed. Much like an instrument or a sport, literacy must be learned, not obtained, and overtime will be mastered.
