What Is Literacy

Post  mgreteman on Wed Mar 13, 2013 1:15 am

Gee used the word discourse to help him define literacy. He says that by discourse he means a socially accepted association among ways of using language, of thinking, and of acting that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a socially meaningful group or a social network. He makes it clear that he believes literacy is largely dealing with social groups and how they interact not only with members of each individual group, but with other groups as well.

This didn’t really change my understanding of literacy, simply because I think it is rather obvious that literacy includes not only language, but thinking and acting as well.
